History of Nottingham Nottingham, Bensalem, PA

Nottingham, Bensalem, PA is a small borough located in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. It has a rich history dating back to the 1700s when William Penn gave the land to his sons, John and Thomas Penn. The area was initially settled by Quakers who established a thriving community centered around agriculture and commerce. Over the years, Nottingham has grown to include many businesses and industries, including manufacturing and technology.

The earliest settlers of Nottingham were members of the Lenni Lenape tribe who were displaced in 1682 by William Penn’s grant of land. In 1702, John and Thomas Penn established a large manor house on the property which served as their family home for several generations. This original structure still stands today as part of an historic district in Nottingham.

In 1831, industrialization began with the opening of the first grist mill in what would become known as “Milltown” or “Old Georgetown”. Soon afterwards, numerous other mills popped up in various locations throughout town resulting in rapid growth over the next few decades. By 1900 there were more than 30 mills operating within Nottingham’s boundaries providing employment for hundreds of residents.

Nottingham also experienced substantial growth during World War II due to its proximity to Philadelphia Naval Yard which supplied goods and services for troops overseas. Afterward, many veterans chose to make Nottingham their permanent home leading to an influx of new families into town throughout the 1950s-70s era. Today’s population remains diverse with different nationalities represented among its residents reflecting this long history of immigration from different parts of the world into Nottingham.
